Online: Aotearoa Digital Identity: Hui Taumata

Next year is set to be a colossal year for Digital Identity in New Zealand. 2021 will see the formalisation of a New Zealand Digital Identity Trust Framework through the introduction of a Digital Identity Bill.  Building on that, MBIE’s work on a Consumer Data Right will create significant demand for data to start flowing through the ecosystem in Aotearoa, and we will be operating under the strengthened Privacy Act.

Aside from the legislative progress, organisations are starting to ‘find their place’ in the Aotearoa digital identity ecosystem, and we are all benefitting from the wisdom so generously shared from Te Ao Māori as we recognise that identity is a taonga.

To get the ball rolling on the year to come, Digital Identity NZ is organising a Hui Taumata (summit) you won’t want to miss!

In this Hui, we will experience a Kapa Kōrero with an all-Māori panel exploring perspectives from Te Ao Māori, and you will hear from the DIA, who will be updating us on the Interim Trust Framework. We will also present our initial views of an Aotearoa Digital Identity ecosystem.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a foundational document for Aotearoa, and its articles and principles provide a powerful framework that can be applied to digital identity for Māori and non-Māori alike.

The principles articulated in Te Tiriti are relevant and applicable to the development and use of digital identity systems for all; Māori and non-Māori, for people in Aotearoa and throughout the world.  

These principles have the potential to enhance the mana of indigenous communities, marginalised people groups and those facing challenges of access and accessibility – the principles are Kāwantanga (honourable governance),  Ōritetanga (equitable partnerships), Rangatiratanga (self-determination and agency) and the protection of freedoms.

In addition, we are lucky enough to have two international leading voices in the industry on board for the event. You will have the pleasure of hearing perspectives from both digital identity expert Bianca Lopes (Brazil) and digital money and identity consultant David Birch (UK).

Bianca Lopes – Co-Founder of Talle, Identity & Data Expert & Speaker, Host of BintheKnow Show

Naturally curious and fascinated by the intersection of humanity and technology, Bianca is an economist, a mathematician and a serial entrepreneur. Throughout her career she has worked as a banker, lead sales, partnerships and product strategy at a biometrics company as the CIO. She has supported over 40 financial institutions and 8 governments as a partner and

consultant to help reshape their human approach to technology, rethink the role of digital identity, and support their innovation agendas. As an experienced speaker in data, identity and fintech, she saw first hand the literacy gaps exist from the c-suite to the front line in finance. All these experiences converaged a year ago, leading her to co-found Talle, a global strategic media group specializing in supporting business leaders and fintechs to connect with the goal of transforming how innovation is done across the financial sector

David Birch – Author, board-level advisor and commentator on digital financial services

David G.W Birch is an author, advisor and commentator on digital financial services. He is Global Ambassador for Consult Hyperion (the secure electronic transactions consultancy that he helped to found), Technology Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation (the London-based think tank) and a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey Business School. He is an internationally-recognised thought leader in digital identity and digital money; was named one of the global top 15 favourite sources of business information by Wired magazine and one of the top ten most influential voices in banking by Financial Brand; created one of the top 25 “must read” financial IT blogs; was found by PR Daily to be one of the top ten Twitter accounts followed by innovators, along with Bill Gates and Richard Branson, rated Europe’s most influential commentator on emerging payments by Total Payments and was recently awarded “Contributor of the Year” by the Emerging Payments Association.

Kaye Maree Dunn – Director and Co-Founder at Āhau

Kaye Maree is an entrepreneur and Permaculturalist from Te Rarawa, Ngā Puhi, Ngāi Te Rangikoianaake, Ngāti Mahanga me Ngāi Tāmanuhiri and resides in Wainuiomata Wellington. She is fascinated with family, community and technology and has been working in the realm of Maori and Community development for over 17 years.

Kaye Maree is a Contracted Special Projects Manager with Maori Womens Development Inc and Managing Director of Making Everything Achievable Indigital Blockchain Limited and digital identity platform Āhau.

Quality Governance and Enterprise is a passion for Kaye Maree where she wants to ensure individuals have the right tools and support to govern their organisations with confidence and competence. She has been working with a range of Rangatahi and Iwi groups with Te Whare Hukahuka for over the past 4 years in the Ka Eke Poutama programme and loves being involved lifting the transformative capability of Whanau, hapu and iwi led entities to actively contribute to the growth of NZ’s economic potential, in particular, the potential of social enterprise.

Jane Renee Retimana – GM Strategy and Corporate Affairs, Payments NZ

As General Manager Strategy and Corporate Affairs of Payments NZ and the newly launched Payments NZ API Centre™, Jane is responsible for leading and driving corporate and industry payments system strategy, innovation programmes and business development. She is the senior leader heading up a diverse portfolio across both the Strategy and Corporate Affairs business units. Her responsibilities include chairing and facilitating industry collaborations through the long-term payments system strategy initiative Payments Direction and strategic industry forums. Jane also has executive responsibility for the Payments NZ API Centre.

A firm believer in workplace diversity, Jane is the founder of ‘The Link – connecting women in payments’ network. This Payments NZ initiative empowers women working in payments by giving them a platform to connect, share experiences and discuss challenges. Prior to joining Payments NZ in 2012, Jane had an extensive career in the public sector where she held several leadership roles. She has widespread governance and business management experience. Jane is currently the Chair of the Board of Trustees at Browns Bay School, is a member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand, and a Director of Comprehensive Care Limited – a primary health organisation. She holds a Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) from Massey University of New Zealand.

Ben Tairea – Developer, Innovator and Entrepreneur at Āhau

Ben Tairea (Ngaputoru, Kuki Airani) a determined problem solver and impact entrepreneur. Ben has varied experience working across a number of industries including logistics, construction, health, and education and now developing his career for the past 5 years working in business development of whanau driven enterprises and training as a software developer.

The combination of these two passions led Ben to develop Āhau, a tribal management and identity platform of which Ben is the co-founder and Kaiwhakahaere (CEO). Āhau’s mission is to empower indigenous communities through technology and has a strong focus on the integration of decentralised technologies with traditional protocols for community and cultural development.

Belinda Allen – Client and partnership Director at Orion Health

With whakapapa to Southland and Te Tai Tokerau, Belinda is driven by a desire to promote the incredible range and scale of opportunities that the tech industry has to offer to the creative youth and rangatahi who live in our remotest regions. A founding committee member of Women in HealthTech, she is also a champion for increasing the diversity of leadership teams across the many ‘Tech sectors and associations that TechNZ represents, as a proven way to lift financial performance in general.

Belinda is an experienced Sales and Business Development Director, having worked for public and private sector organisations both here and overseas. She has helped kiwi companies to export to the United Kingdom and North America and understands the need for both clear direction and drive to be successful. After a decade away she returned to New Zealand and has been ensconced in the HealthTech sector for the past two years.
